バーマンは「ビルマの聖猫」の名に相応しく、伝説と神秘に包まれています。伝説では、サファイア色の目をした金色の女神ツン・キャン・クセを祀った寺院に住んでいたシンという名の白猫がバーマンの先祖だとされています。その白猫は寺院が攻撃されて飼い主が亡くなったときに亡骸に飛び乗り、自身の体を女神色に変えて僧侶たちを奮い立たせたと現地で語り継がれています。しかし、実際にはビルマからフランスに持ち込まれた猫がバーマンのルーツなんだとか。第二次世界大戦によってたった2匹にまでなってしまいましたが、<a href="/category/photo/KIND/32/">シャム</a>や<a href="/category/photo/KIND/48/">ペルシャ</a>との交配を繰り返すことで絶滅の危機から逃れました。

The Birman fits its name of “Saintly Cat of Burma”, and is shrouded in legend and mystery. Legend has it that Singh, a white cat who lived in a temple dedicated to the sapphire eyed golden goddess Tsun-Kyan-Kse, was an ancestor of the Birman. A local story has been handed down that when the temple was attacked and its master died, that white cat jumped on the remains, changed its body color to the color of the goddess, and inspired the monks. However, the reality is that a cat that was brought from Burma to France is the roots of the Birman. After World War II only 2 cats remained, but through breeding with <a href="/category/photo/KIND/32/">Siamese</a> and <a href="/category/photo/KIND/48/">Persians</a>, they escaped extinction.
