地域猫とは、特定の飼い主ではなく、地域住民の協力によって世話や管理がされている猫のことを言います。1997年に神奈川県横浜市磯子区の猫好きな住民たちが、これ以上<a href="/category/photo/KIND/57/">野良猫</a>を増やさないようにと世話したことがきっかけとなり、全国に地域猫運動、地域猫制度として普及しました。主な活動として、定期的なエサやりとその後の片付け、糞尿の始末、不妊手術を受けさせるなど幅広く管理しています。

Community cats are cats without a specific owner, but rather a neighborhood of people working together to care for them. In 1997, in Isogo ward of Yokohama city in Kanawaga prefecture, a group of cat-loving citizens banded together to take care of the area’s alley cats so more alley cats wouldn't be born. After that, the community cat idea swept through the nation. The main activities performed are feeding at a set time, cleaning up, taking care of excrement, and spaying/neutering procedures.
